Ego Death No. 1, 2015, acrylic on birch, 16 x 16 in.
I had a creative counselling session with Marlo Johnson and we discovered some deep discord in the way I was painting. So she asked me to make three small paintings as if I was never going to show them to anyone else.
This exercise was really difficult at first - after five days I just had backgrounds. Then suddenly I had to stop what I was doing and go to the studio and paint this.
Ego death is the end of the subject/object split, the experiential realization of your oneness with everything/one that is. This painting marks the beginning of a new way of painting and being.
If you’re an artist and want to understand yourself and your practice better, I highly recommend you talk to Marlo via marloland.com.
